                  Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer P.E. and sports?
Afternoon activity time often includes an option for structured sports as well as fun impromptu activities such as obstacle courses that promote coordination and overall fitness. Students also have a full hour of outdoor free play every day, during which they frequently play pick-up soccer, capture the flag, or other neighborhood-style games. In addition, 5th-8th graders who join our hospitality sports teams (flag football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and soccer in the spring) practice once weekly and have regular games with other league members. Everyone gets to play!

Why don't you have computers in the classrooms?
Children pick up computer skills quickly, and can do so with minimal instruction in their home environment, often becoming much more adept than their parents! Reading, writing, and arithmetic, on the other hand, are harder to master. We think it is more valuable to spend school time teaching these basic skills.

Do you do any standardized testing?
We administer the Iowa Test of Basic Skills at the end of each school year, starting in third grade. The Iowa Test is widely used and accepted by public, private, and charter schools. Before entering kindergarten, students are given a kindergarten readiness assessment.

                  What is the admissions process?
Come to an open house or schedule a private visit; we are happy to show you around. If you like what you see, send in an application along with a nonrefundable application fee. After reviewing your application, we will schedule a family interview. Students are accepted based on available openings, suitability to our program, and the school's ability to meet the child's needs. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.

                  What is your tuition?
Tuition is $8,000 per year for first grade through eighth grade, $6,000 per year for pre-K and kindergarten, and $4,500 per year for the pre-K and kindergarten part-time programs. Tuition is payable in 12 monthly installments, and we offer a 25% discount for siblings.

                  Are there scholarships available?
Please contact us directly to inquire about the availability of scholarship money. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, which is evaluated by the Board of Directors.

What about students with special needs?
Please contact us to discuss your child's needs.

                  Will you be accredited?
No. The accreditation process is primarily intended for private high schools in order to assist colleges in assessing potential students.

Are you affiliated with any other schools or any religion?
No. The New Classical Academy is a secular school which is not affiliated with any religion or any other school.
