                  Afternoon Activities
Every day after lunch, each student gets to choose an activity from among a few different school-wide options. Most options draw on, and animate, our topics of study--science experiments, historic reenactments, costume making, instrument making, arts and crafts projects, puppet theater, and more--reinforcing subject matter for students and allowing them to engage with the material in a unique and creative way.

Other options--like chess, building fires, cooking, bamboo cutting, and sewing--expose students to new skill-building experiences, or--like our snowman-building competitions and decade-themed dance
parties--give them a chance to have some good old-fashioned fun with friends.

We usually include an option for an outdoor group sport or game, and quiet study time is always available.
                  Fun Fridays
On Fridays we close our workbooks and focus on fun--but the learning doesn't stop.

Sometimes, we collaborate on large-scale projects tied to our studies. In the past, we've created an authentic archaeological dig, a model Colonial American village, and a Civil War field hospital--all in our own back yard!

Other Fridays, we go on field trips to explore our area's many cultural and natural resources.

Friday is also a day for special on-site activities with parents and community members. Students have identified mushrooms with a mycologist, discussed a doctor's experiences treating patients in Haiti, learned the basics of "wheel throwing" with a local potter, and more.
